The Turkey

December 13, 2009 by bnieder

Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends to be thankful for the love, joy, and things they value most in life.  Imagine how a turkey feels on Thanksgiving, or to what lengths he would go to keep from being the guest of honor.

The Flu Hype

The talk of H1N1, as well as the new cases springing up every week has got people thinking: is it something that is hyped up by the media, or is it an illness that should be taken as seriously as smallpox, pneumonia, or the common flu?  Many people around here feel it is the latter.  It is a disease that should be considered seriously by anyone who is more likely to get it, ranging from children to the elderly, and they should take the proper steps to keep from getting it, such as the vaccinations that are being provided by clinics throughout the country.  This cartoon brings light to the issue, by addressing it as a serious one.

A Late Harvest

November 30, 2009 by bnieder

A late harvest is definately what it was this year, regarding the insanity of the weather.  Central Illinois was plagued by an Autumn that felt more like Winter.  The ideal colors and smells of the leaves and trees of Mother Nature’s twilight were replaced with the chilly, damp, and dreary conditions of the Season which Christmas resides in.  Nothing could really be done with the crops of corn and beans until things warmed up somewhat, and that did not happen for quite some time.  Therefore, Christmas came early this year through the symbolism of this cartoon.  (Speaking of which, it is my first one in color.)

The Umbrella

The Umbrella

The Morton Pumpkin Festival is a widely popular event, known as such throughout the entire nation; and people from all over travel to Morton to participate in its festivities.  Well, last year the Festival was a washout . . . literally.  It rained almost the entire time it was open, and the profits were hurt because of it.  As this year’s Festival approached, people had their fingers crossed that rainstorms would not be the case this time.  Imagine how those people felt who believed in ” jinxes.”  Hence, this cartoon.

The Party

The Party

A fight broke at a party at Illinois Central College in East Peoria over . . . wait for it . . . a rap song.  Yeah, slightly on the ridiculous or ludicrous side.  Then again, those are the perfect conditions for a cartoon.

Parents Who Host

Parents Who Host

Sure, it’s illegal for adults to buy alcohol for minors, but it’s also illegal to let minors drink at parties, under an adult’s supervision.  Or at the very least, authorities are taking more notice of it.  So, on that note, parents . . . watch out!

The Booze Tax

Preparing for the Race

The Duck Race

Everyone has floated a rubber ducky in the bathtub.  Well, imagine doing that amongst a sea of rubber duckies, and not in a bathtub, but in a river.  Well, that is exactly what Peoria does every year in late summer.  They sponsor a race of rubber duckies, that is attended by thousands of people, from all corners of the surrounding areas, and the proceeds are given to the Center for the Prevention of Abuse, which is also located in Peoria.  Those duckies do alot!

The Balancing Act

The Balancing Act

Alas, Peoria is not safe from the recession, and things are getting increasingly difficult.  In a story in the PeoriaTimesObserver, it was announced that the City Board is trying to find ways to save money and balance the budget for next year.  The ironic thing is, in order to save money you need money to start with, and it is in short supply in this town.

The Safe Town

August 2, 2009 by bnieder

The Safe TownThe Morton Times News did a story on how residents are proud of their ” crime free ” town.  Hmm, I guess it’s worth mentioning that they conveniently forgot that the Burger King on Morton Avenue was robbed last year.  It’s naive to think that crime isn’t everywhere.
